Beginner's Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Malta

Laying the ground works for success.

Never tried Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu before? Or, you may have some experience, but you want to fully prepare yourself before jumping into the regular classes? Perhaps you looking for a learning environment where you can be introduced to the sport at your own pace? Arete Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Beginner’s classes have been designed with these questions in mind.

We know that learning a new skill can be tough, especially a martial art. Remember… We were all beginners once! In fact, Arete BJJ has only been open since early 2016, so the majority of our students had no prior experience.

More so, if you’ve never tried BJJ, we understand that you might be worried about injuries, not having the right gear, or not having the fitness you think is required. That’s perfectly normal! However, it isn’t the case with these classes.

We start off by talking you through the basics and then lightly practicing them. You can sit out at any point, you can tap out at any point, you can ask questions at any point. We really do encourage your active participation and we don’t expect you to have the answers!

You don’t need any gear to begin, just shorts and a t-shirt (preferably a rash guard), a mouth-guard (optional), and a big bottle of water.

No matter what your fitness level is, BJJ is a unique sport in that it requires both anaerobic and aerobic tolerance. You will be moving in new and dynamic ways which are going to make you sweat regardless of your sporting background. The number one (and fastest way) to build this athletic tolerance is by training. Seriously, just jump on the mats and start training, the rest will come naturally!

The only way to overcome your fears is by jumping on the mats and conquering them!

Breakdown of the classes

In our Arete BJJ beginner’s classes, you will learn basic positions, submissions, escapes and fundamentals of wrestling. The techniques being taught revolve around the following essential areas:

Guard

What is the guard? Fighting off your back versus passing on your feet. Guard retention. Grips and sweeps. Triangle choke.

Side control

What is side control? How do you get to side-control? How do you escape side-control? Progressing to mount. Kimura and Americana submissions.

Back mount

Why is back mount such a strong position? How to defend against the rear-naked choke. Always put the hooks in.

Mount

What is the mount? How to use your weight effectively. How to keep your chest down. Moving to high-mount. Armbar submission.

When can you begin?

We run the beginner’s course on 4-week cycles, each week reflects an area listed above. This means that after those 4 weeks, we will start again from the beginning. You can never over-practice the basics, and without them, you cannot succeed.

The classes are not progressive. Instead, each class is built to drill down certain basic techniques. This means that you are welcome to join whenever you want. This system has been inspired by some of the highest performing club curriculums in the world!

Training times for the beginner’s classes can be found from here

Once you have completed a minimum of 8 beginner’s classes, you are welcome to join the advanced classes. This will ensure you are sufficiently prepared!

What do I need to bring to the classes?

You don’t need any special gear. Here’s the list of things you need to bring.

  • T-shirt (please make sure there are no buttons or zippers.)
  • Shorts (same as above.)
  • Cut your nails
  • Bottle of water
  • Sweat Towel.

Important:

  • We highly recommend getting a kimono as soon as possible! Students taking part of advanced classes are required to have a kimono.
  • There aren’t any shops in Malta, where you can buy a kimono. There’s a shop called BjjFightGear.com, that delivers kimonos to Malta
